In the old days, prior to the invention of the diamond saw, it was very common for only one large diamond to be cut from a well formed diamond crystal. As little as possible was ground off the top, resulting in very small tables, and a little off the bottom to create the culet. (Like a very small table at the bottom of the stone, most modern cut round brilliants now have a pointed bottom with no culet.)
Since much of the lighting of those days was the oil lamp hung on a wall the diamonds were cut to reflect more of the light coming from the side (0 to 45 degrees) than our modern stones are cut for today, with so much of our lighting coming from the ceiling. They were also cut with short wide lower pavilion main facets, which created the large flashes of light and dispersion that make this cut so very popular with those loving the older style cutting.
If you like your old European cuts with a larger culet, just let us know and we can order it for you.

Treasures in the Attic Ready to ship treasures that are mostly one of a kinds, when it is gone it will be removed, never to be seen again. These are things that we made for spec, or made for a client who forgot to pay, or sadly, made for a client who was then told, "NO!" when the proposal was made.
